CD ROM drive door won't open

Hah, you mean that tiny hole next to the button?  Yep, that is the one. I got the disc out that was there but the drive seems to be dead.

The light isn't on the drawer would not shut itself.

Sheesh.

started the software for the drive and somehow it was "locked"

LeeAnne, definitely look for the "straightened out paper clip hole" (great description, Tammie! ) It should be in proximity to the button you push to open the drive.

eBay is notorious for scams on laptops.....

the door to the drive is flush with the tower. Don't know where hole would be for paperclip trick.

LeeAnne - does it have the "straightened out paper clip" hole?  My old (older then 5 years old) cd bay has it, and the newer dvd does too. 
My computer is really old too... won't defrag either any more.  How come the hubby and kid have new ones? 
The last desktop I bought for hubby was $400 on ebay.  Do the research tho!  Just yesterday I was bidding on a new Panasonic Toughbook for the kid and ebay yanked the auction.

I can't get the door open at all. Nothing to grip it with. The light that is usually on it. Is out.

Hang in there LeeAnn, someone will come along and help you.  Check out the thread I started about my DVD player, in the tech talk section...Kennef came along and FIXED my problem!!  The tray to my DVD wouldn't open, about the same problem as you are encountering...he said that if you can pull open the door, stick a paper clip or a pin in a small hole in the tray itself, and then push the open button to see if it is just stuck.  Hope this helps!

All of a sudden my CD ROM drive door won't open. There is a disc in it. I was backing up photos and forgot to eject the disc and when I remembered it a week later the door won't open.

Crap. I need a new computer, DH spent $1200 on this one five years ago and doesn't understand that five years is a long time for computers.

I'm still running Win 98SE because when I tried to upgrade to WinXP it wouldn't do it. Some of the hardware is too old. No drivers possible.

The monitor and CD ROM drive are on the fritz and I'm worried about the year old hard drive because it won't Defrag.......
