You're in Katfish!  I think that you may be the last one on this list.  If anyone wants any there may be another batch of pods in a week or so.  I'll post it.
I will be going to the PO this afternoon to mail the seed packages.

Yes, indeedy, I DO want some.  I will PM you.

I would think that letting them dry out would be the best way to ship.  I know they are microscopic, just about, from back when I had a plant.

But you might have a point - since they are water plants, perhaps they are not intended to dry out, like land plants' seeds.  In that case, a barely damp paper towel in a plastic bag, in a regular paper envelope, would suffice, I'd think.

Katfish, Shanna, and Julles, you're all on the list for the next pod popping collection.  The seeds I just sent out yesterday were already showing signs of growth like the ones in Emm's photo above.  The seeds are larger than a grain of long rice.

Unless the plastic snack baggies pop during delivery I think the moist paper towel wrapped around the seed should be fine.  Those who got in on the first shipment got approx. 20 plus seeds.  Hoping they all make it.

BTW - PM me your address if you haven't already so I can mail out as soon as the seeds pop.

Wow!  Thanks for the photo!  They looked like they got to you a-ok.  I was so worried they would get crushed or worst, the baggie busting and the bit of water leaking out.  Phew!

Now to await the other packages that went out...they are further than Michelle.

My experience with water hawthorn is that it typically has white flowers, but once and a while you will get a pink flowering seedling. I think you will find that the pink flowering plants don't come true from seed and you will mostly have white flowering seedlings from them. I've had pink seedlings pop up here and there, but I've never ended up with a group of pink seedlings. I could be wrong though, maybe there is a stable pink variety. BTW, I love this plant and it is great to have something that will flower this time of year in zone 8 despite the occasional light freeze (the fragrance is also an add bonus), but I think this plant could be trouble in the wrong place. I've seen it overtake an earthen bottom pond, luckily it was a man-made one. It produces copious amounts of viable seed with each bloom when conditions are right, just something to keep in mind.

Thanks for sharing Aquaphy!  It's also interesting you say the flower has a fragrance.  My sense of smell is not all too keen but I will give it a whiff when I get out after I get a few things done.

So for those out there getting seeds from my pink hawthorne...there are no guarantees that they will bloom pink.  But if they do.... Yahoo

With the questions that I've had postmasters ask me when shipping padded envelopes, I worried about the seeds as well. Smiley

Mine came yesterday beautifully!  They had started growing thru the towel, so gentle tugging was required.  This morning they are reaching for the sky.  Thank you so much!!!  Sorry it took so long to post but my pc at home is down and I had to use work's.  I can't wait for summer!!!

Julles and anyone else with the new seeds I sent out, here are photos of the seed pods!

1 - Flower above is transforming seed pods (shaped like a short string bean) in the center before losing all the flower petals.  The Flower shell below shows all the flower petals gone and the seed pods very large.

2 - Side view of the flower case with all the seed pods peaking out.

3 - The seed pods almost pop out of the flower case when they are ready.  There is a soft shell around the seed (helps float the seed elsewhere) which splits open and the seed falls out and sinks to the bottom.

The seeds almost immediately sends a wispy shoot out and reaches for the surface all the while developing a tiny leaf.  The seeds that escaped travel to faraway ponds have already sent up leaves to the top of the water from almost 20" below.  Some of these seeds made it back into the mother plant pot of dirt and rooted

Thanks for the photos.

When I had my water hawthorne, (and, yes, it smelled WONDERFUL, sweet and soft), I had seedlings coming up all over the pond, so many I just plucked them out and trashed them.  Then my hawthorne died for the season, and didn't come back the next year.   Sad   I bought others, but they never lived long.

Funny, even with all those seedlings in my pond, I never realized they came from pods.  I thought the seeds were the tiny black specks you can see in this thread's very first photo.  Which I now know are probably just specks of pollen on the ends of the stamens.

Silly me, for going around the pond stores trying to snitch a few flowers from plants, thinking I could get those specks of pollen to germinate.  red face

Annette, my seed pods arrived a few days ago.  Like some others, one of mine was already sprouting in the baggie.  I have put all  three in soil in water gardens in the yard, three seperate containers, none with fish so no one will be nibbling on the delicate seedlings.  It's warm enough here that the seeds should do fine outdoors.

I'm excited.  It's a gorgeous plant!  Thank you for the opportunity to try to get one to grow!

Too funny Julles!  I'm glad the seeds are growing for you.  Yeah I wondered too when Emm said to watch out for the pods of seeds.  Who knew what to look for?  Now I feel like a pro (hardly) on collecting water hawthorne seeds.  Even my family will call me outside to collect the popped seeds.  Can you post some photos of the youngins'?

The weather was very warm for the past almost 2 weeks and the hawthorne has been producing many flowers = pods!  I forgot to mention I do smell the fragrance of the flowers.  Thanks Aquaphy for telling me that.  I would never have put my face that close to the water to smell them  Cheesy

Jules.... when you said put in soil.. did you just like lay it on top of soil and add just a touch of water or did you try to bury/plant it?? how much water are you putting on top first off?? any info from yall on how your planting appreciate.

I floated mine in water under a light (they didn't actually float) and as roots began emerging I poured them out onto paper towels like a strainer and took half and threw em in mud bottom warm tuber tank and other I stuck the rooted growing end in dirt carefully in Dixie cups half full and then added water, either way works as they are all rooted now with tiny floating pads

Once they're growing, how far under water should the top of the pot be?

wEll right now my warmed! (key word) tub they have 1-2 in at most till I feel they are big enuff for potting individually... And the ones already in Dixie cups have cooler water with 2-3 inches... The warmed water ones are doing better, and some of the seeds in Dixie cup I find float to top as they develope leaves that float and the roots didn't anchor yet ... Pics come when computer fixed... Sorry phone typing sucks
